ARTS AND LETTERS Regent Fr. Rodel Aligan, O.P. called for the conversion and surrender of members of Aegis Juris Fraternity involved in the hazing and death of Horacio Castillo III.
“Walang Tomasinong Duwag. No Thomasian is an enemy of another Thomasian,” Father Aligan said in his homily in a Mass for Justice offered for the eternal repose of the soul of Castillo last September 22, 2017 at the UST Central Seminary Chapel.
Along with the Civil Law Regent Fr. Isidro Abaño O.P., Father Aligan urged for the conversion of those who are involved in the said hazing to repent and face the consequences of their actions and “that they are to fall in God’s Justice while being made to answer to a proper forum.”
Father Aligan reminded Thomasians on the core values of commitment, competence, and compassion as the foundation of a Thomasian identity. He reminded them of competence as a way of dealing with other people with respect and in the engagement of what is right and wrong, lawful and unlawful, and what is moral and immoral.
“Justice without compassion is cruel but compassion without justice is inutility,” Father Aligan added.
The Artlet Regent further criticized the embodiment of Thomasians of these values following the hazing and death of Castillo. Citing St. Paul, he said that all Thomasians belong to one body and Church as the People of God. He said that everyone is responsible for one another, even in the sins of another Thomasian.
Justine Labaco, a co-alumnus from AB Political Science of Horacio and the Vice President - Internal of the Faculty of Civil Law Student Council also called for the end of all deaths due to fraternity hazings and the system of hazing in all of the colleges emphasizing that acceptance must be the center of brotherhood.
The Mass is co-organized by the Pax Romana – AB Unit along with The Political Science Forum and the Faculty of Civil Law Student Council.
