Whenever we are talking about ways in life, what comes to my mind is Moana. In the movie they are very particular in finding the way, in fact, Moana discovered that her tribe were voyagers before. Just like every movie, they have a very catchy song and one of them was "We Know the Way" by Opetaia Foa'i featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda.
In this song, Moana's ancestors describe how they find new islands and how they measure their distance from the islands by looking at signs such as the sea, the stars, and the wind. We know that voyagers really know their way when it comes to finding new islands.
In today's Gospel Jesus tells us that our journey in this world would be meaningless if we do not know the way. Jesus tells us that He is the way to the Father. But most of the time, we tend to sway from His way and we do our own ways. As a result, we tend to commit sin and hurt him.
Jesus also tells us that we don't need signs (just like what Moana does) to know the way to the Father. He tells us that following, believing, and loving Him is already a form of loving the Father. In today's Gospel, he answered Thomas' question about what is the way to the father: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me. If you know me, then you will know the Father; indeed you have known him, and you have seen him."
But some people think that was only true during the time of Jesus when the people could interact and see Jesus in first-hand. But what about us Christians who live in the modern era? Could these statements still be true up to this day? The answer is yes. We experience Jesus through the Sacraments, particularly, we become one in breaking and sharing the His body and blood through the Holy Eucharist.
We remember, we celebrate, and we believe with him through this sacrament. Experiencing these sacraments with Jesus is knowing and experiencing more about Jesus. Knowing and experiencing more about Jesus is knowing and experiencing more God's love.
Today, let us reflect: Have we truly followed God's way? Have we recognized Jesus as the way the truth and the life? Have we followed, loved and obeyed Jesus in recognizing that He is the way, the truth, and the life? Have we followed, loved, and obeyed His teachings in our own vocations and professions? Amen.
