"I WILL follow Him, follow Him where ever he may go."
Seems music to ears as this lyrics kept repeating in the ears of listeners. This song by Sister Act reflects their devotion to God. Or if it would be applied to ordinary life, following someone most dearly to a person. It seems easy to say to follow someone wherever the person goes as it could be sang repeatedly. But in reality, it is hard. It is like giving the half of your life for that person. And following Him, that is a different story.
In today's Gospel, Jesus encountered three different followers. The first follower was an enthusiastic follower. He even told Jesus that he will follow Him wherever he goes. But Jesus told him to leave his property behind. Then the second follower was called by Jesus. But again there are was a hindrance for the follower wants to bury his father first before following Jesus. The third follower came and also told Jesus, "I will follow you but I will say goodbye first to my family." Jesus then suggested that to become his follower, he must not look back.
The Gospel shows that we must give up everything to become a true follower of Jesus. But of course that is a tedious act. It is a challenge for us on how we should prioritize our Lord above everything. And by reflecting and practicing God's teachings, we too could become a follower of Jesus. Not just in words, but also in faith, action, and spirit.
In this we say our prayer: Loving God, I think you for choosing me to be your disciple and for the gift of your Son, Jesus. Help me proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel by word and by deed today and every day. Open my heart to the outcast, the forgotten, the lonely, the sick and the poor. Grant me the courage to think, to choose and to live as a Christian, joyfully obedient to God. Amen.
