Like Mother, Like Son

Today, amidst the season of penance and fasting, we are once again reminded of God’s enduring love and faithfulness. We celebrate on this day the Solemnity of the Annunciation. Our gospel for today is very famous, for it is in these verses where Our Lady makes her entrance into the story of salvation. More than being the Mother of our Savior, the Blessed Virgin Mary is very remarkable for three significant qualities that has touched the hearts of those who love her.
First is humility. Derived from the Latin word “Humilitas” which means “grounded”. It is no wonder why most of the portraits of the Annunciation depicts Mary as seated lowly on the ground as the Angel Gabriel delivers the message from on high. By being humble, we open the door for the good things in life to enter.
Second is obedience. “Be it done unto me according to your word”. She was very brave for a young girl who knew not of the things to happen, yet willingly submitted herself to the will of God. In times of difficulty, it wouldn’t hurt to trust God and His ways for He knows our paths more than we do.
Third, which is the most important on of all, is love. Love made her say “YES” to the will of God and repay the disobedience of eve. Even until the very end, it was love that placed her at the foot of the cross to accompany her Child in His final hours amidst the jeering crowd that surrounded them.
These virtues were not only epitomized by Our Lady but also by the fruit of her womb, our Lord Himself. Although our Lord in His infinite wisdom knew of these virtues beforehand, it also goes to show that “Like Mother, Like Son”. There is hymn in the breviary which is entitled “Mary the Dawn, Christ the perfect day”. In all the lines, it depicts how our Lady being the source has brought forth the greatest sign of all ages, Jesus, our “Emmanuel”. We have the Blessed Virgin Mary to thank for her purity of heart. For without whom, we wouldn’t have our promised Messiah. It is fitting that we who are children of Mary, do challenge ourselves to be like Mary.
She was humble, obedient and loving to the Father and to her fellow men. The greatest of thanks also be unto God who in the right time, has sent forth into the world His long promised Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus, who like His mother Mary, became humble and obedient until His death on the cross. The fruit of Mary’s womb was long destined to be the sacrificial lamb for the forgiveness of our sins.
These events took place that the Will of the Father may be fulfilled so that all things may be renewed in Christ. It was all because of the love that a Father had for his weary children, a shepherd to his lost sheep, and a ruler for the people under his care. May we be like Jesus and Mary, who came to do God’s Will first before anything else. Are we brave enough like them to say “YES” to God’s love and “NO” to sin? This Lenten season, may the virtues exemplified by this Mother and her Son be also seen in us that all people may come know that we are Christians and that we are proud to let it be done according to His Word.
