Back in our toddler days, whenever our parents are not around or whenever they are busy in their work, we are often entrusted with our guardians. Some of them are our relatives such as our uncles or aunties or sometimes, we have our yayas to take care of us whenever we our parents are away.
Back in my toddler days, I was often accompanied by my Auntie Fe whenever I go to school. My class starts at 12 noon. My mama would take us to school early in the morning and my auntie and I would then wait for my 12 noon class. After I enter the school, my auntie would wait for me outside the school until 5 p.m. My mama would then fetch us again and we go home together. My Auntie Fe was my closest guardian back then. She helps my mama in making sure that I will have a complete day. She helps my mama to make sure that I am safe and sound.
The sixth Sunday of Easter is the Sunday before Ascencion Sunday. And after the Ascension Sunday would be the Feast of the Pentecost which would commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles. The Pentecost also marks the birthday of Christianity.
In today's Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that we are not alone even though He would already ascend to heaven. Jesus promises us that He would send us a helper. This helper is the Holy Spirit which would guide us in our faith and in our everyday lives. Through the Holy Spirit, we encounter the Son, Jesus, and God the Father. The Holy Spirits completes the Holy Trinity that we Catholics believed on.
The Holy Spirit is not like any other guardian. It is not someone different from Jesus but it is Jesus Himself. For the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one. The Holy Spirit is there for us to make sure that we are inspired by our faith and that we would be guided in our faith.
But Jesus tells us that this helper would be sent to us as long as we remain in His commandments. A lot of us stray away from His commandments because we feel that Jesus is not with us. We feel that there is no sense of following His commandments because we don't see, feel, or touch Him. But in reality, we experience His saving grace and love through the Holy Spirit which could be first hand experienced in the Sacraments we take. Celebrating the Holy Eucharist makes us able to experience Jesus with us by sharing on His Body and Blood through the consecration of bread and wine.
Let us reflect today on how are we following His commandments? Are we worthy of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit? Have we remained faithful to Christ's commandments? Amen.
