Do not be afraid, I am with you.
I have called you each by name.
Come and follow Me.
I will bring you home.
I love you and you are mine.
Is this song familiar to you? Most of us hear this beautiful song during the communion part of the mass. What do you feel when you listen to it? For me, I feel a sense of security and assurance. I feel secured and assured that He is with me at that moment. The song reminds me that I am not and will not be alone in facing this life.
He is in my life.
And He is in yours too.
He is always present in our lives.
Jesus in today’s gospel reminds us not to be afraid in proclaiming the message of Truth – the Truth of God’s infinite love and mercy. Jesus calls each and every one of us to spread the message of love.
Do not be afraid to testify to the truth!
But we must also be cautioned by Pilate’s golden question:
Quid est veritas? What is truth?
We are in the age of information and communication. We are also plagued with internet trolls, fake news from sites and persons, and fallacious ideologies. Messages are being shared to us in a rate wherein the veracity and authenticity of them are sacrificed. We often get into fights with other people due to our eagerness to endorse and adhere what we think is the truth. Yes we are called upon to proclaim what is right despite the surmounting opposition that we may face. But let us be prudent in our actions.
Veritas in Caritate. This should be familiar to a Thomasian for it is our alma mater’s motto: Truth in Charity. Do not be afraid to proclaim the message of truth! But we must also share this truth because of our love for God and neighbour. We are not called to testify to the truth in order to marginalize those who are wrong. We are called to testify to the truth in order that our brothers and sisters who are misled be corrected and be reunited to the community.
The martyrs died for their love of Jesus Christ. They know that the consequence of such testimony will be their death. However, they also believe that their bodily death will just be temporary and their soul will be forever. The same thing also for the truth proclaimed. Our bodies may perish but our ideals will remain as long as there is but one who continues to believe and testify to the truth we confess.
Do not be afraid to proclaim the truth, but be also charitable.
