“The last would be the first and the first would be the last.”
I remember the first time I flunked a recitation in law school. It was awful. It was really heartbreaking for I have not even said a single word for my mind was totally blank. I cannot remember a single word of the answer. That day, I kept asking God, why did this happen to me? Why is life unfair? Why now? Why today? These questions bugged me.
After that recitation, I realized that my thoughts are not God’s thoughts. The next few meetings, I managed to redeem myself. Although I am not that confident of my recitations, I know those recitations are much better than the first time when I haven’t uttered a single word.
In the Gospel today, Jesus told us the Parable of the Laborers. In the story, a vineyard master went to the town to hire laborers for his vineyard. He hired laborers in the morning, then at noon, then hours before the day ended.
At the end of the day, the laborers received equal salaries from the master. After the first-hired laborers knew of this, they complained to the Master.
They said, “these last ones worked only for an hour and you have made them equals to us who bore the day’s burden and the heat.”
The Master replied, “My friend, I am not cheating on you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give the last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?”
During those awful recitations, I kept asking God, "Lord bakit naman ngayon pa? Nagkulang ba ako sa dasal at sa aral? May nagawa ba akong mali?"
After those awful recitations, I felt that I am like the first-hired laborers who question the thought of God. Then I realized, who am I to question God? His thoughts are not my thoughts. His plans are not my plans. I cannot outwit on God for He is God.
Today, God reminds us that His thoughts are not like our human thoughts who only think of ourselves. There will be times that we would feel life is unfair but during these times of despair, we offer it to God. He knows what is the best for us. We may be having some setbacks in our lives right now but this doesn’t mean that God will abandon us. God has a bigger plan for us and He is just waiting for us to trust in Him.
